A practical guide to timing your treatment in Christchurch's climate, preparing the right way, navigating PCOS and hormonal cases, and what year two actually looks like.
If you've decided diode laser hair removal might be right for you, this is the practical companion. How to time your treatment in Christchurch's climate, how to prepare, how it works with PCOS or hormonal hair growth, what year two looks like, and what an appointment at our clinic actually feels like.
We're Totally RAD Beauty, a boutique skin care clinic in Papanui, Christchurch. All of our laser therapists are Laser Safety Certified, and our principal therapist is a certified Laser Safety Officer with a Diploma in IPL and Laser..
Timing Your Treatment in Christchurch
Diode laser is a year-round treatment, but in Christchurch (where summer UV can be intense) there's a smart way to plan it.
We generally recommend an autumn or winter start. Sun exposure is naturally lower, your skin is less weather-sensitive, and consistency is easier. A course beginning in autumn typically runs through winter and spring, so by summer most of the reduction is behind you.
Summer isn't off-limits though. Many clients aren't outside much, and others are diligent with SPF. The timing question is really about lifestyle, not the calendar. We factor in ski trips to the Southern Alps, outdoor work and farming, beach holidays, and the heat from saunas or hot pools after sessions.
Our advice is rarely "you can't do this in summer." It's "let's plan it together so it's done safely."
Pre-Treatment Prep: A Simple Checklist
Good preparation makes a real difference.
Two weeks before
Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading. Minimise sun exposure and avoid sunbeds or self-tanners.
One week before
Be mindful of active skincare (retinol, exfoliating acids) on the treatment area. Let us know about medication changes or recent skin irritation.
Day before or morning of
Shave the treatment area as instructed. The laser targets the follicle below the surface, not the hair above it. Arrive with clean, product-free skin.
The most common mistake we see is clients stopping shaving because they think the hair needs to be visible for the laser. The opposite is true. Between sessions, if regrowth bothers you, shave only. Never wax or pluck, because that removes the follicle the laser is meant to target at your next session.
PCOS, Hormones, Pregnancy, and Medications
Some clients come to us with circumstances that need a more realistic conversation upfront.
For PCOS, perimenopause, menopause, and other hormonal causes of hair growth, laser is still very worthwhile. But expectations need to shift. The hormonal trigger continues, so longer-term maintenance is usually part of the plan. The aim is significant ongoing reduction, not a single course and done.
For pregnancy, we generally pause treatment as a precaution. Breastfeeding is assessed case by case. Some medications (including Roaccutane and other photosensitising medications) may also require pausing or adjusting our protocol.
What we've learned across these cases is that the most valuable thing we offer often isn't the laser itself. It's an honest conversation about what's realistic.
After Your 6 to 8 Sessions: The Long View
Most clients reach a stage after their initial course where they no longer need regular treatment. Some only need occasional touch-ups. Others, especially those with hormonal influences, benefit from a steadier maintenance rhythm.
What surprises clients most in year two and beyond isn't the result itself. It's how much easier life feels. The realistic long-term picture isn't necessarily "no hair, ever." It's far less shaving, fewer ingrowns, smoother skin, and a genuine reduction in the time and mental energy spent on unwanted hair.

What It's Like at Totally RAD Beauty
Walking into our Papanui clinic shouldn't feel like a production line. We're a boutique clinic, which means clients aren't rushed through a system. In most cases you'll have the same therapist throughout your journey, the same person who consulted with you at the start and who knows your skin, your goals, and your conversations.
The environment is warm but professional. The pace is unrushed. The judgement is zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions do I need?
Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, for their initial course. Maintenance sessions may follow, especially with hormonal hair growth.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes. Shaving is the only method you should use between sessions. Waxing, plucking, and threading remove the follicle the laser is meant to target.
Does it hurt?
Most clients describe it as a mild warm pinprick or a quick light snap. Contact cooling helps keep it comfortable. Sensitivity varies by area.
Can I have laser during pregnancy?
We generally pause treatment during pregnancy as a precaution. Breastfeeding is assessed case by case.
How long do results last?
Results are long-lasting after a full course, with significant ongoing reduction. Some clients are essentially hair-free in treated areas. Others, especially with hormonal factors, benefit from occasional maintenance.
Ready to Talk It Through?
Whether you're new to laser or have tried other methods that didn't work, we'd love to talk it through with you. Every journey starts with a consultation. No pressure. Just a real conversation about what you want, what's realistic, and what a plan might look like.
