Relaxation vs Deep-Tissue vs Lymphatic Massage in Christchurch: Which One Do You Need?

Relaxation, deep-tissue or lymphatic? Choosing a massage in Christchurch should not feel like guesswork.
Here is a plain-English guide from the team at Totally RAD Beauty in Christchurch: how to choose between a relaxation, deep-tissue and lymphatic massage, what happens from the moment you arrive, and how to get the most out of your time.
The short answer: choose by how you want to feel
Want to switch off and unwind? Choose a Relaxation Massage.
Prefer slower, more focused work on particular areas? Choose a Deep-Tissue Massage.
Want a gentle, light-touch session? Ask about Lymphatic Massage.
Not sure? Book a Relaxation Massage and tell your therapist what you would like more of. They will tailor it to you on the day. Where it is necessary and suitable, your therapist can also combine techniques, such as gentler work in one area and more focused work in another.
Relaxation vs deep-tissue vs lymphatic massage: what is the difference?

Relaxation Massage
A calming, flowing massage built around how you are feeling that day. You can ask for more time on agreed areas such as your back, shoulders, legs or feet, and your therapist will adjust pressure, positioning and pace to suit you. It is a popular place to start if you are not sure.
Deep-Tissue Massage
A targeted massage with slower, more focused work on particular areas. A common myth is that deep tissue means the hardest pressure possible. It does not. Good deep-tissue work is purposeful, not painful, and your feedback guides the session. If it ever feels like too much, say so and your therapist will ease off.
Lymphatic Massage
A specialised session using gentle, rhythmic, light-touch techniques. Unlike our other massages, the pressure always stays gentle and is not increased on request, because this technique is designed to be light. At Totally RAD Beauty it is a 90-minute session, and we do a quick suitability check first, so please get in touch before booking. If you have new or unexplained swelling, a diagnosed lymphatic condition, cancer-related swelling or recent surgery, you may need medical or specialist assessment before booking.
What happens before your massage
A good massage starts with a conversation. At Totally RAD Beauty, every visit begins with a short consultation:
Your goals: what you would like from your time, such as unwinding, more attention on your shoulders, or simply a quiet hour.
How you are feeling today: your comfort, energy and anything that has changed with your health.
Pressure and focus: the level of pressure you like (for Lymphatic Massage, the touch always stays gentle), the areas you would like more time on, and any areas to avoid.
A suitability check: your therapist confirms the service, length and price with you before you begin.
If you have a fever, a skin irritation or a new health concern, let us know before your visit. We may suggest rescheduling.
What happens during your massage
Privacy and comfort. You will have private time to get ready, and you will be draped throughout so only the area being worked on is uncovered.
You are in charge. Too light? Too firm? Cold? Want different music? Just say so, and your therapist will adjust whenever they can. The only exception is pressure in a Lymphatic Massage, which always stays gentle. Your therapist would much rather you speak up than put up with it.
Talk or stay quiet, whichever you prefer. Some people chat, others close their eyes and say nothing at all. Both are completely normal.
Falling asleep is fine. It happens all the time, and it usually means you were relaxed.
What happens after
Take a moment before you stand up, as you may feel a little floaty. Sip some water, and if you have time, stay for a while in our lounge. A little less rushing, a little more time for you. Most people feel calm and rested, and are able to head straight back to their day, but it is nice to allow some quiet time if you can.
How long should you book: 60 or 90 minutes?
60 minutes is a lovely first visit and enough for a full-body Relaxation Massage.
90 minutes gives you more time to settle in and more time on the areas you care about. It is our top pick if you want to properly switch off.
Lymphatic Massage is a 90-minute session.
How often should you get a massage?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Many people book when they feel they need a reset, while others fit a massage into their routine, such as once a month, as time for themselves. Your therapist can suggest a rhythm that suits your schedule and budget. If you have a health concern, check with your doctor first.
Quick questions before you book
Will I be naked? You undress to your comfort level, in private, and you are draped throughout.
Is it going to hurt? A massage should never feel like something you have to endure. Deep-tissue work can feel purposeful, but you can always ask for lighter pressure.
What if I am embarrassed about my body? Your therapist sees people of every shape and size, every day. You are covered throughout, and the focus is on your comfort, not on how you look.
Should I eat before my massage? A light snack beforehand is fine, but a big meal right before can make you less comfortable. Drink some water, and arrive a few minutes early so you do not feel rushed.
Are your massages strictly professional? Yes. We offer professional massage only. We do not provide or tolerate sexual services of any kind, and we can refuse or end a session at any time if a client's behaviour is inappropriate.
Want to add a little more to your visit?
If you would like to turn your massage into a longer reset, you can pair it with an Infrared Sauna Dome session, pressotherapy or a relaxing facial ritual. Our team will help you choose what fits, and one core treatment plus one enhancement is usually plenty for most visits.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Which massage should I choose if I am not sure? A Relaxation Massage is a good place to start. It is calming, the pressure is tailored to you, and your therapist will adjust as you go.
What is the difference between a relaxation and a deep-tissue massage? Relaxation is flowing and calming, with pressure and focus tailored to you. Deep-Tissue is slower, more focused work on particular areas, and it is not about maximum pressure.
How long should a first massage be? Sixty minutes is a lovely first visit. Choose 90 minutes if you would like more time to settle in and more attention on particular areas.
Is it okay to fall asleep during a massage? Yes, it happens often and usually means you were relaxed.
Can I choose the pressure? Yes, in most cases. For Relaxation and Deep-Tissue Massage, tell your therapist the pressure you prefer and speak up at any point to change it. Lymphatic Massage is the exception, because it always stays gentle.
Can I combine massage techniques in one session? Yes, where it is necessary and suitable. Your therapist may blend techniques by area, for example gentler work in one area and more focused work in another. Lymphatic Massage is its own specialist 90-minute session and stays gentle throughout, so please ask us before booking if you would like to combine it with anything.
